DIY Sewing Table

DIY sewing table
We're slowly but steadily making progress on our apartment. Today I'll be sharing my new sewing table with you. It's also the first piece of furniture we've built by ourselves. Granted, there wasn't much building involved in the traditional sense. Nontheless, I'm pretty proud of it!

A sewing table was very on top of our to-do list when I arrived because Rein knows I can't live without being able to sew, so he was all for preserving my mental health and getting that sewing table done as quickly as possible. We looked for a used office table at first, but I thought that would feel sort of heavy in our living room, and a bit too big. So, I came up with a plan for a very simple desk with just the esthetic I was going for with the whole room. We're trying hard not to buy anything we don't love.

 What we used:
The first thing I did was to paint the trestles black. I used a black wood lacquer instead of paint so that the beautiful wood surface would still be visible through the finish. One coat was enough. I absolutely love the result! Just what I was going for.
I also painted the wooden slat with the same lacquer. Then Rein cut it into four 60cm long pieces. We measured the distance the trestles should be placed at from the edge of the laminated board, and Rein hammered the slats onto the board with enough space between for the trestle to rest in. These stop the board from moving on the trestles.

I love my new sewing corner and it works well in our apartment. I like that I can basically eliminate the table all together when the need arises, just take the top off and fold the trestles together. We need that kind of flexibility in our small living space.

What do you think? Are you up for a DIY table yourself?

  1. Ma ootasin nii ammu seda postitust :) Superilus laud ja kogu kupatus üldse! Ma saan aru, et need piirded segavad lauaplaadi külgedele nihkumist, aga kas jalad ise on stabiilsed? Nii äge ikka.

    1. Aitäh, Laura! Kusjuures, jalad on väga stabiilsed.

  2. So simple! One would think that it's difficult to make their own furniture and you totally debunked the myth ;) I especially like the fact that it can be easily deconstucted to gain some space (+ it's transport friendly)

    1. Exactly! In our small space, we want to have us much flexibility as possible. And making furniture is possible even when you don't have many tools or a big garage to work in. You can't do everything but you can definitely do something. I actually have another little building project in my head. Can't wait to get working on it!

    2. And it's cheaper to DIY! When I was in the elementary school, we moved into a bigger apartment and our parents got me and my brother new bed matressess (the old beds were too short for us :D ) The problem was, our matressess were 10 cm narrower than regular ones and only bed frames in the right size were insanely pricey. That's when my dad decided to make the beds himself. He ordered planks in the right sizes and I remember having some great time with hammer and nails ;) In the price of a single bed we got two beds, 3 linen drawers and 5 shelves! And lots of fun making it, LOL :D

  3. I love this! Being an apartment dweller myself, I know how hard it is to find space for our beloved crafting addictions. I love that you can fold this table up. We're moving into a 2 bedroom. The second bedroom is going to be my craft room/guest room. I may try to talk the hubby into building me one so I can clean up when guests are staying over!

I also loved that you used laquer to let the wood finish show!

    1. Lucky lady! You get to have a craft room, so jealous! I think this type of table is perfect in a multipurpose room, so I hope you'll get your hubby to agree. If not, you could totally build it yourself!
