My Style: In trendy color

sweater: refashioned by me / tank top: made by me / skinny jeans: local supermarket / earrings: made by me / brooch: a gift from Tamar / belt: retail, Tally Weijl
Oxblood might be the nastiest name for a color ever given, but it does look pretty. And it's one of this season's hottest trends. I just happened to have an oxblood sweater in my wardrobe, refashioned a couple of years ago from my Mom's very old sweater. A perfect time to pull it out and put it on.

In other news, winter is here! It has been snowing all day around here. Can't wait to get to my parents' tomorrow to enjoy the white fields and the quiet of the countryside.

P.S! Did you notice I'm getting blonder? Can't decide whether to go even lighter or darker again...

DIY Repurposed Gift Cans

I'm officially in the get-ready-for-the-holidays mode, which means lots of holiday related handmade projects. Making handmade gifts has been one of my holiday traditions for years. I try to make most of the presents I give to my loved ones myself or at least include a handmade element into them. It's not always easy to squeeze in many big projects into an already busy season, but there are some quick and easy projects you can do to incorporate a little something handmade into your holiday givings. And if it includes repurposing trash items... Well, we have a winning combination.

These repurposed tin cans can be used in so many different ways. You could use them simply as gift wrapping if the item is small enough, or you could fill the can with delicious candy. And the best part is that the recipient can reuse it as storage for jewelry or other knick-knack.

Find out how to make these gift cans after the jump.

Sunday Spirit: My holiday checklist

january 1st, 2010
Christmas time seems to be the busiest time of the year for most of us, which means there's little time to actually relax and drink in the holiday spirit (pun intended). Well, this year I'm determined to make time to enjoy the season and get into the holiday feel.

So, here's my holiday checklist to make this a special season:
1) Making each other an Advent calendar
2) A walk in Tallinn Old Town, admiring the Christmas decorations and seeing the Christmas tree
3) Making holiday decorations and decorating our home
4) Making handmade gifts for loved ones
5) Baking gingerbread cookies
6) Watching a Christmas movie with my hon'
7) Going to a Christmas concert (where I don't have to sing myself)
8) Going to a holiday craft show
9) Celebrating the holidays with my schoolmates and friends
10) Listening to Christmas songs and drinking glogg.

The days are getting shorter and darker, which makes sharing my projects with you a lot harder, but I'll do my best to share some holiday projects and gift ideas with you.

Have a happy Sunday!

My Style: Thrifted from head to toe

Happy Wednesday, my friends! I hope you're having a great week so far. I know that everyone in the States is prepping for Thanksgiving. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday with your family and friends! For us here in Estonia, tomorrow will be just another Thursday. But, I think every day is just as special as you make it.

Dress / Boots / Earrings - all thrifted

Today I wanted to share with you my favorite outfit of the past week. This one consists of mostly thrifted items. To be honest, most of my wardrobe consists of thrifted or refashioned items, since I shop retail like once a year or so.

Those green boots are a recent find, and for only 5€. I mea, talk about a good deal. They seemed brand new and are genuine leather. I think if you go thrifting regularly there's hardly any reason to shop retail. Easier on your wallet, and on the environment as well.

Refashionista: How to re-knit sweaters

Happy Monday, my friends! The closer we get to the end of year, the harder it it to make projects for the blog. Not only is it getting super busy in school, but the days over here are getting shorter and shorter, which means daylight is hard to come by. Therefor, after pics on the hanger. Times are tough, I'm telling you.

Anyways, today I'd like to share a clever way to alter knitted sweaters. It's not always easy to alter sweaters and make them look correct and "like new" after the transformation. Sometimes, however it's possible to make the alteration virtually undetectable. Here's how I shortened the sleeves of this black and white sweater:

1)  I decided how short I wanted the sleeves to be. Then I factored in the length of the new ribbed part. Then I started to detach the unwanted part of the sleeve. First, cut one strand of yarn. Make sure it's only one.
2) Start unraveling the row of stitches. Just pull the strand of yarn that you cut open.
3) This is what the sleeve should look like once you're done unpicking the row of knitted stitches.
4) Now you can easily pick the stitches on to knitting needles and knit a new ribbed sleeve end.

This method can be used to re-knit any part of the sweater, or knitted socks of mittens.

This was harder to put into words than I thought, so if you have any questions, please ask in the comments and I'll try to clarify.

Don't forget to enter the Giveaway! Entries are open until Midnight tomorrow.

Inspiration: Lovely lace

Sources: 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6

Lace is one of my favorite things to work with when refashioning. It's an instant beautifier no matter the project you use it in. Here are a few projects from the Pearls & Scissors' archive to try out this weekend:

Spice up a plain t-shirt with a lace neckline....

Or add a sneaky and cute lace cutout heart.

Add a little romance to your simple pencil skirt (tutorial here).

How cute are these lace laces on the sneakers? Make your own.

Have a creative weekend!

Refashion Basics: Tips for sewing knits with a serger/overlocker

Tackling your first refashion projects can be challenging, especially when you're not an experienced seamstress to begin with. And even if you are, refashioning existing garments can create challenges that you don't encounter when sewing from scratch. You might need a few tips and tricks to help you along and to give that extra confidence to get started. I've been there and done that. Every skill I have, has come through trial and error and a lot of practice. And I'd like to share that knowledge with you. So, I've created this new series called "Refashion basics" where I'll be sharing my refashioning tips and tricks.

Today I'd like to focus on sewing knits with a serger/overlocker. Sometimes all you need is to take in the side seams of a sweater to make it wearable. Or you might want to use a sweater to make yourself a winter skirt or some socks.
I know not many of you have this type of machine and there will be a post about sewing knits with a regular sewing machine as well.

An overlocker is a very handy machine to have when you sew a lot with knits. I bought mine 6 years ago and have never regretted the decision. However, this machine is not a miracle worker, especially when it comes to thick sweater knits. The main problems with sewing thick knits are stretched and wavy seams and missed stitches. Here are my top tips for sewing with knits:

1) If possible, do a test seam. If you're going to cut a sizable piece of the sweater off, you can test the seam on that portion, leaving room for the final cut.
2) Turn the gather/stretch nob to maximum gathering. This will help to prevent wavy seams.
3) The thicker the knit the longer the stitch. I use the maximum length on sweaters. Again, it helps to prevent wavy seams.
4) Make sure you loosen the 1 and 2 thread (the needles) tension a little bit when sewing thicker knits, compared to regular jersey knits or other fabric.
5) Hand-basting close to the seam line can also prevent stretched out seams.
6) It can be tricky to obtain a straight seam line. Mark your seam line with tailor's chalk or a piece of soap (work wonderfully on darker material) to make it easy to follow.
7) Don't cut any excess material before sewing. The existing seams will help hold  the layers in place giving you better lined edges.
8) Pin the layers together about 3cm from the seam line. I usually pin every 5 cm along the seam line. This keeps the layers in place, so you don't end up with mismatched edges.
9) Use a tapestry/wool needle to hide the thread ends. Leave long tails when sewing, thread the needle with the tail and push it through 5 cm of the seam. Cut the excess thread.  I learned this tip from Zoe.

I hope these tips are helpful! If you have any tricks to add, do share them in the comments.

My Style: Navy+black

Sweater: refashioned / Navy blouse: recent thrift store find / Trousers: H&M / Belt: Tally Weijl / Earrings and necklace: gift
I declared a while back that I was taking on a quest to define my personal style. I think it's about time for an update.

This is one of my favorite outfits recently. I wore it to a school recital and felt put together, comfortable and, most importantly, confident. I've started to focus more on how something makes me feel. I've been analyzing almost all my daily outfits - what do I like about it? what don't I like about it? how does it make me feel? I'm beginning to get a better idea of what sort of outfits make me feel good about myself, and which ones don't.

I've also done a couple of body image exercises based on my psychology studies. It's a little bit like getting reacquainted with yourself. I believe you can't be truly confident without loving yourself from head to toe. Loving every bit of your imperfect self. We are all imperfect, that's what makes us human. Knowing our best features and how to highlight them is so much more important than having the "perfect" body shape.

So, what do I love about this outfit? I love the way the blue blouse brings out my blue eyes. I love how the narrow belt accentuates my waist. I love that it looks classical, elegant, but not over-done. And I love how the length of the sweater (where it hits me) elongates my legs.

Sunday Spirit: Family cuisine

As you may know, I'm not much of a cook. There was a period way back in my teens when I loved making all sorts of pies, but nowadays I'd rather leave all the cooking to my other half. The only things that I make are the tried and true recipes I've learnt from my Mom.

I think we all have some sort of family cuisine that influences our tastes and our cooking. One of the favorite recipes I've learned from my Mom is sweet fried bread. We always ha the principle in our household that you shouldn't waste food. Whenever white bread started to get old my Mom would make yummy fried bread. And if you want to try, here's a little recipe (it's not an exact science):
1) Take 1-2 eggs, whip them with a pinch of sugar in a shallow wide bowl (a soup plate is perfect) and mix in a sip (about 1 dl) of milk.
2) Heat the pan and add a bit of oil.
3) Dip the bread into the egg-milk mix making sure it's soaked.
4) Put it into the pan and fry from both sides until golden brown.

They taste the best when still warm. I love to add a coat of whipped cream to make it extra yummy.

Bon apetite!

Customize: Button embellishment

You all know I love me some buttons. Whether they are in my ears, on my clutch or....on my pants/trousers. Buttons can be a fun alternative to pearls, and a good way to to recycle. I always remove all the buttons from old clothes that can't be upcycled. So, if you have some colorful buttons, why not use them to spruce up an old pair of pants or a pocketed skirt.

I'll be back tomorrow with the second part of Pearls & Scissors' fall lookbook.
