Sunday Spirit: in the countryside

I spent the weekend in the countryside breathing the clean air, baking a cake, eating corn and visiting the horses. I loved every minute of it! It's so good to get out of town every once in a while and enjoy the simple pleasures of the countryside.

How was your weekend?

P.S! There's still time to enter the giveaway! International entries are welcome :)

Favorite Friday: Autumn Oxblood treasury by Julie Meyer

Today I wanted to share this beautiful treasury with you curated by Julie Meyer that centers around this season's #1 fashion color. Oxblood is really growing on me, although the name is gross - I don't even know why people would want to call it that. But it's a deep fall color and it does have a hint of royal in it.

Click here to get all the info about the products in the pictures and to share this beautiful treasury with your friends if you'd like.

It's been a hell of a week and I'm really glad to get out of town for the weekend to breathe some countryside air and reload my batteries. I hope you all have a fantastic weekend! I'll see on Sunday!

Experiments in upcycling

I've been experimenting with different upcycling projects and designs in the past week. I feel the need to redesign pre-used materials. I love working with used materials, because they already have a certain form and a character. Their condition can sometimes limit the possibilities of design, but that just makes the process more rewarding, more exciting.

I have a bunch of vintage ties that have been waiting for me to figure out what their second life should be. And I think I finally figured it out. It took me a while, a little experimentation and some trail and error. But, bow belts it is!

I figured out a one-piece design, so I don't have to cut into the tie at any point. I think it's pretty cute. I'm considering creating 4-5 of these and adding them to the shop, but I'm really not sure. I would really appreciate Your feedback at this point.

What do you think? Would you wear it?

D.I.Y. Button embellished clutch

As you may have noticed I seem to be obsessed with buttons lately. Ever since I bought that box of vintage buttons, I've wanted to incorporate them in to every project I make. And the button clutch is just another form of my obsession. But, I love it so! I mean, look how fabulous the buttons make the clutch.

Refashionista: Floral dress to peplum top

Happy Monday everyone! And mondays mean refashions here at Pearls & Scissors. Today I'm sharing a total reconstruction project. It's too specific to make into a tutorial, but I thought I'd give you a little refashion inspiration.

Sometimes there is really no way of fixing a garment the easy way. This floral dress was just such a case. It had lost it's shape and it didn't look pretty on me either. But the moment I saw it in a local reuse center I fell in love with the pattern of the fabric. Such a pretty floral pattern, and I had just the perfect project in mind for it. I knew it would make a very pretty peplum top. I was reassured by the making of my first peplum top that it was a very good silhouette for my body type and I knew I wanted to make one more.

Now, I know it's way past summer in these parts, but I think a sleeveless top like this can easily be transitioned from summer to fall by adding a cute cardigan or jacket. Either way, when I get inspired, I want to make it no matter the season. And I'm glad I did!

I did a complete reconstruction with this one. I cut apart the whole dress and recut the pieces with my peplum top pattern I combined from a simple tank top pattern from Burda and Victory pattern's Ava dress skirt panels.

I used an old white t-shirt to cut the binding for the armholes and neckline. I love when I can make a project using only the things I already have. Oh, and I got the dress for free from the center for buying a big box of buttons. So all in all the material cost of this top was 0€.

I'm rocking the top with my pearls & scissors earrings and the recycled braided bracelet (tutorial here).

How was your weekend? Mine was super creative and I have several awesome crafty projects lined up for you over the course of the next couple of weeks.

Sunday Spirit: Pancake recipe

Sundays are pancake days at our house as you already know. When I first posted about it, Denysia asked for a my pancake recipe. Well, I discovered it's not that easy to put down a recipe that you don't have. I learned my way of making pancakes from my Mom and then over the years it has naturally evolved into my own kind of making. I've never used a recipe and I never measure any of my ingredients. So, this morning I started making pancakes and for the first time measured everything so I could share my recipe with you.

The process is very simple. Take a big bowl, add eggs, salt and sugar and whisk them together (I use a mixer). Then add the liquids and the flour. Whisk some more, until there are no lumps in the batter. Taste and add more sugar if you'd like, the vanilla sugar is also optional. Add a dash of oil to the batter (this is supposed the decrease the amount of oil needed for frying).
Heat your pan, add oil and start frying. I usually make big pancakes, so-called over-pan pancakes, which actually just means I cover the whole pan evenly with a thin layer of batter. Fry both sides until golden. Easy peasy!

My favorites at the moment are pancakes with caramelized apple and pear slices and honey (like in the picture above). My other half prefers such exotic mixes as honey-cheese-salami or apple jam-cheese-ham pancakes.

And of course have a tea or a cup of good coffee with you pancakes.

Happy Sunday, friends!

Favorite Friday - A handmade outfit

I know it's technically already Saturday by the time I hit the "publish" button, but I really meant this post to go up on Friday. Besides, favorite saturday doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

I've been meaning to do a favorites post for ages, but never seem to get around to it. Every time I spend at least 5 minutes on Etsy I end up finding amazing goodies that simply make me drool like a dog (or, like a dog named Hugo). There are truly so many inspiring and crafty designers out there, that it's impossible to put them into one comprehensive list. I find someone new to admire every day. So, I hope to inspire you by making these little round-up posts form time to time. Just to let you know that handmade rocks!

Oh, and did you notice these items would all fit nicely into one cute outfit? Not a coincidence, I might add.

Click on the numbers below to find out where all this awesomeness comes from.

So, what are your plans for the weekend? I'm planning on having as creative days as these past two days have been. Lots of new fabulous projects to share in the coming weeks!

Soon in the Shop: Blue Button Bracelet

Remember last week's post about new design work in progress? Well, I've been at home because of health issues and that gave me some much needed sewing time to finish this gorgeous piece of jewelry. I'm planning to make at least 2 more in different colors.

Talk about statement jewelry! This one will not go unnoticed, I'm sure. I used a shirt cuff for the base. This way I can reuse some shirt scraps. And, of course a selection of unique vintage buttons, all sewn on by hand. I garnished the whole piece with lots and lots of seedbeads.

I'm in love! How about you?

Wardrobe Reinvention: 3 outfits from summer to fall

If you're new to the blog, Wardrobe Reinvention is a series I started to challenge myself to find new ways to combine my existing wardrobe and through that gain more knowledge into my style.

Summer in Estonia is what it is (or isn't) and because of that, there are summers that I get to wear one summer dress. Once. It's not always this bad, but, I do feel I don't get to wear my summer clothing enough. Summer is my favorite season and I love summer clothing - all the dresses and skirts and beautiful light fabrics. I miss them during the winter. So, this week I set myself the challenge of creating 3 outfits that include a very summery item. Something I usually wear only during the summer.

dress: made by me / cardigan: H&M / belt: Tally Weijl / upcycled knit scarf: made by me / boots & earrings: thrifted

This one is my favorite and has already had a successful outing. I love the combination of cream white and burgundy (totally rockin' the fashion color of the season). I think it's very me as well, I felt very comfortable in it.

shorts & necklace: thrifted / blouse: made by me / cardigan: Reserved / shoes: Kaubamaja
Sometimes I'm a monochromatic girl, what can I say. Although I like the ensemble, I'm not completely sure these shorts look that good on me. Perhaps I should make them just a tad slimmer in the legs. But, all in all a very comfortable outfit.

skirt: thrifted / tee: refashioned by me / knit coat & knee-high socks: H&M / boots: no idea
The jury is still out on this one. It's a bit all over the place, or no? I really wanted to make this skirt work. I love the colors and pleats, but I've worn it only a few times. It just seems to be not working with the rest of my wardrobe.

I liked this little experiment. How about you? Do you pack away your summer clothing come fall, or incorporate them into your fall wares?

Beading Basics: Memory wire bracelet

I remember when I first started making jewelry. I bought just a few notions to make earrings, and after making my first pair of earrings, I was hooked. I was so excited to make my own jewelry - I could make a new pair of earrings every day and the possibilities were endless.

The basics are pretty simple and once you've mastered them, you can always learn more. But, I think having the basic skills will give you so much more freedom in your style, because you can design and make your own custom jewelry that's 100% you and nobody else has it.

So, here's a simple project perfect for a beginner.

You'll need:
1. Beads - I used an assortment of different size beads that I had left over from previous projects.
2. Memory wire - it's a pre-bent wire that holds it's shape. You'll need the bracelet size.
3. Wire cutters - the one tool you can't do without when working with wire.
4. Round nose pliers - there are all kinds of pliers, but in my opinion, the round-nosed ones do the trick most of the time.

The steps are very simple and self-explanatory, but just in case:
1. Start beading the wire. I just crabbed the beads at random differing between smaller and larger ones to create a nice textured but non-symmetical look.
2. Just keep adding beads on the wire as long as you have as many bracelet layers as you'd like to have. I went for 5.
3. Bend a loop to one end of the wire.
4. Make sure all the beads are nice and tight and cut the wire about 1cm after the last bead. Bend the tip just like you did the other end.
5. There you have it!

My beading terminology is so bad in english, but hopefully the pictures speak for themselves. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask in comments or via email. I'll do my best to answer.

Refashionista: Lace application skirt

I'm a girly girl. I always have been (the super-wide overalls phase in 6th grade doesn't count). So, I often gravitate towards flowers and lace and pearls when refashioning clothing. Especially, when it's a skirt that I'm making over. I mean, skirts just scream for lace, don't they?

I used this tutorial to add a little freshness to this simple pencil skirt. I think this alteration really makes it more glamorous and elegant. Don't you agree?

Sunday Spirit: Weekend away

Where did the weekend go? This one was full of action and went by crazy quickly. I enjoyed good music on Friday and spent the rest of the weekend on the other side of Estonia celebrating my Grandmother's 75th birthday. Happy Birthday, Granny!

I love Võrumaa. It's always been a magical place for me ever since I was a child. I spent hours in the lake on the picture every summer growing up. We used to hold breath-holding contests and jump "cat" "stone" and what not. And thinking back, the days spent at Grandma's are one of the happiest childhood memories. I can only hope to be just as awesome when I become a Grandmother one day.

What's your favorite place in the whole wide world? Any special childhood places?

Working on...

...new designs for the shop. I'm playing around with different ideas. This is always the most fun part of the whole creative process - visualizing the outcome and what might work best. It always gets me so excited for the end result. Now I just need a little sewing time to finish these fabulous bracelets. Hopefully they'll be ready soon.
