Refashionista: Lace heart cutout tee

Today's tutorial is simple, quick and smokin' hot. If you're new to the refashion business, a good old t-shirt makeover is just the place to start. It doesn't require a lot of sewing experience or skills. And, all you need is a simple t-shirt and a bit of stretchy lace. Oh, and the fun part? The heart changes color (wink wink)!

If you want to make your own, make sure to click "read more" below!

You'll need:

  • A t-shirt
  • a little bit of stretch lace, depending on the size of your heart (I don't mean the real thing)
  • matching thread (either to the tee, or the lace)
  • a sewing machine
  • scissors
  • paper and pencil
  • tailor's chalk or chip of soap

1. Take a piece of paper and fold it into half. Draw one side of the heart, as big as you like it to be. This way, when you unfold it, you'll have a symmetrical heart. But, you can also do an asymmetrical heart if you prefer. Cut the heart shape out and you'll have yourself a template.

2. Turn your tee inside out. Place the heart template on your t-shirt (make sure you know, which side is the left side) and trace with either a washable felt pen, tailor's chalk or just a chip of soap, which work even better on darker fabric.

3. Remove template. Cut a square from your lace that's a couple of cm bigger than your heart shape (you can see mine in picture 5). Place the lace on your heart shape covering it nicely. Pin in place. Make sure to use lots of pins to keep it from shifting during sewing. I didn't pin from the inside of the heart, but if your a beginner at sewing I would recommend it.

4. Sew the lace to the tee with a narrow zig zag stitch following the line you drew on the tee. It should be clearly visible through the lace. If you have a lace with a busy pattern, you should trace the heart shape to the lace instead of the t-shirt so you could trace it while sewing.

5. Now that your heart is sewn into place, cut the excess lace around the heart. Turn your tee right side out and cut the heart out very close (about 3-5 mm) to the seam line. Make sure to cut only the t-shirt fabric, NOT the lace. Be very careful with this step and take your time, otherwise you'll ruin all your work.

Now, put on your favorite color bra and your knew tee and you're all set to go! I love mine and can't wait to wear it.

    1. Actually, it's a transparent black leopard print lace, the pink is my bra showing through. It's what makes this t-shirt extra fun! The heart changes color according to what you wear underneath :).
